Queens College’s Department of Sociology is saddened to announce the passing of Joanne Miller. She died peacefully in her sleep on March 9, 2017. Joanne had been a valued member of the sociology department since 1986. She received her . from the University of Wisconsin in 1975, and then became a research scientist at the laboratory of socio-environmental sciences from 1975 to 1982, and then as Associate Director and then Director of the National Science Foundation Sociology Program from served 1982 until she joined our department as an Associate Professor. She became a Professor in 1999. She served as Director of our MA Program, and Chair, as well as Acting Dean of Graduate Studies and Research and Director. She held several position with the American Sociological Association, including serving on the Council and the Committee on the Executive Office and Budget; she was Secretary and held other positions with the Eastern Sociological Association.
